What Is Roof Edge Protection?
Roof edge protection is a temporary guardrail system fixed along the eaves, gable ends or perimeter of a roof. It stops people and materials falling off the edge while trades work. In New Zealand it must meet AS/NZS 4994 and is the most common way to manage fall risk on residential roofs.
Re-roofing, replacing spouting, installing solar or building new? A fall from a single-storey roof can cause serious injury, and New Zealand has no “safe” minimum height. New Zealand has no minimum height for managing falls. WorkSafe’s August 2026 working-at-height guidelines say any fall risk from any height must be managed, and recommend physical barriers or fall restraint for any potential fall over 1 metre. On a residential roof, edge protection is usually the simplest way to comply.

Generally, yes. Edge protection uses less equipment and installs faster than a full scaffold, so it usually costs less for single-storey re-roofs and spouting work. Full scaffolding is better when trades need a working platform along the walls, on two-storey homes or on steep roofs.
Most residential installs can start within a few days of you approving the quote, and we often have same-week availability. Larger, two-storey or steep-roof jobs take longer to fit. We confirm the install date on your quote after the free site visit, and schedule it around your roofer's start date.
We notify WorkSafe at least 24 hours before erecting any scaffold where a person could fall 5 metres or more, as the law requires. Most single-storey edge protection jobs sit below that height, but the fall risk still has to be managed — which is exactly what edge protection does.
Yes. For roofs steeper than 25°, we use system-rated edge protection with infill panels. Roofs over 35° are outside the scope of AS/NZS 4994.2, so we design a specific solution — often scaffold-based — for those. We check the pitch at your free site visit.
Our systems are installed to AS/NZS 4994.1 and AS/NZS 4994.2:2023, the joint Australian/New Zealand standards for temporary edge protection and roof edge protection installation. They also follow WorkSafe's August 2026 good practice guidelines for working at height.
