Scaffolding Safety Tips for Christchurch Homeowners
Understanding basic scaffolding safety protects your family, your pets, and the tradespeople working on your property. If you’ve booked our residential scaffolding service, here are the ground rules to follow while it’s up.
Key Safety Rules
- Keep children and pets away from the base — never let them climb, even when no one is working.
- Never store items on platforms. Tools, paint tins, or offcuts can fall in even light Canterbury wind.
- Report any movement or instability immediately — contact your scaffolder, don’t try to re-tighten anything yourself.
- Don’t remove or relocate components. Even a single board moved out of place can compromise the structure.
- Watch for weather. Strong nor’westers can lift loose covers — if you spot any, call us.
Weather and Christchurch Conditions
Christchurch wind events — particularly the September–November nor’wester season — put extra load on scaffolding. Our crews tie in to suitable anchor points and use proprietary couplers rated for our local wind zones. If you ever see ties hanging loose, that’s a flag — call us straight away.
What to Expect at Handover
When your scaffold is signed off, you’ll receive a handover certificate (also called a scafftag). Don’t lose this — it’s your proof that the structure was compliant at erection, and tradespeople may ask to see it before climbing on.
For Commercial and Industrial Sites
If you’re managing a worksite rather than a home, our commercial and industrial scaffolding services include written Safe Work Method Statements and weekly inspection schedules.
